Biochar Workshop

August 25 @ 9:30 am - 4:00 pm

$100.00

We are pleased to welcome Chelsea Moseley to the Farm to demonstrate how to make biochar.  Biochar can be added to the soil, up to 10% by volume, to provide a very stable source of soil carbon.  It is said that in the soil biochar has a water holding capacity of up to 300% of its volume.   This transforms the soil into a significant water reservoir.  Biochar also greatly enhances the microbial activity of the soil by providing habitat for soil microbes which are crucial for increasing the soil fertility.  Biochar is most effective if it is first innoculated with soil microbes before it is used in the garden.

This is a full day workshop.  We will start by loading the retort, firing it up and “cooking” the wood into biochar.  This part of the workshop will finish about lunchtime.  After lunch we will demonstrate the process of inoculating the biochar with beneficial soil microbes.  Participants can then help in the process of working the biochar into the soil and covering it with mulch.

Everyone is welcome.  Please wear clothes suitable for gardening and bring your own lunch.
