SUMMARY:TALK - Biological Botanical Growing
DESCRIPTION:Biological Botanical Growing\n\nPresented by Bronwyn Holm\nBronwyn Holm will share a different approach to growing healthier\, more resilient gardens—one that doesn’t rely on synthetic fertilizers or endless inputs. \nBronwyn\, the founder of Earthfood—a biological growing revolution that brings living microbes back into the soil to restore fertility naturally — will talk about nature’s original blueprint for soil health. Most gardeners don’t realise that plants can actually feed themselves—if we stop killing off the very microbes that do the work! \nBronwyn’s talk will reveal: \n\nHow to unlock soil’s natural ability to regenerate itself\nWhy over-fertilizing creates lazy\, dependent plants (and what to do instead)\nThe secret to growing nutrient-rich food effortlessly—with less watering\, less work\, and fewer problems\n\nBronwyn’s talk wll leave gardeners and food growers with real\, practical tools they can start using immediately. \nWhen: 10:30am – 11:30 am \nWhere: Canberra City Farm \nCost: Free \nRegister: events.humanitix.com/biological-botanical-growing-presented-by-bronwyn-holm

SUMMARY:MEET UP - Regenerative Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Regenerative Study Group – October\nOur Regenerative Study Group meets on the first Sunday of the month at the City Farm in the LESS.  We will be continuing to explore the nature of regenerative cultures and their relationship to regenerative agriculture. \nAt the Canberra City Farm we embrace ‘principles and methods and ethics of regenerative agriculture’. These are the bold words of our new Strategic Plan\, but what does ‘regenerative’ actually mean? While ‘organic’ is clearly defined\, ‘regenerative’ is not defined at all. We have used it in relation to gardening and agriculture\, but it also has a much broader application when used to describe societies and cultures. The purpose of this study group is to explore the meaning of ‘regenerative’ and gain a clearer idea of what can and cannot be described as regenerative. \nOur exploration will be divided into two parts. During the first part we will explore characteristics of various regenerative cultures\, as well as critiques of our dominant Western culture. We will consider how these may inform the transformations necessary within our society to live more harmoniously within our environment. The second part will have a practical focus. We will be experimenting with food-growing methods which regenerate the soil microbiological ecosystems as well as broader landscape ecosystems. \nThe study group will be collaborative and self-directed\, meeting once a month (first Sunday of the month) to explore a particular ‘regenerative’ topic. Our inquiry will be led by the participants themselves who are invited to suggest readings\, videos\, podcasts or other media. An aspirational list of topics for Part One\, not necessarily in the following order\, include: \n• Getting started – world views\n• Regenerative cultures\n• Economy\n• Local futures\n• Simplicity\n• Relating to the natural world\n• The metacrisis\n• Natural farming \nThe duration of each session will be between two and three hours and will include a shared lunch or afternoon tea. \nNew participants are welcome. \nWhere: Canberra City Farm in the LESS\nWhen: 2 pm\, 5 October.\nCost: Free \nFor Further Information: email info@ccfarm.org.au

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP – The Living Soil
DESCRIPTION:The Living Soil – Exploring the World of our Soil Microbiome presented by Robyn Hewson\nIn this experiential workshop we will be getting our hands (and noses!) into soil and compost\, and diving deep through the lens of the microscope to explore the complex world of soil microorganisms. \nMuch like the role the human gut microbiome plays in our health\, the microbiology of a living soil helps to feed\, nourish and protect our veggies\, crops and trees\, building their immunity and resilience against attack and environmental stressors.  Although smaller than the naked eye can see\, the bacteria\, fungi\, nematodes\, protozoa\, microarthropods and other organisms that make up the soil food web pack a significant punch; an underground workforce we want to favour and encourage to support all our organic and regenerative practices. \nIn this workshop we will open the window into this microscopic world.  We will examine various soils and composts around the farm (under the microscope and with our own senses) and consider how different plants favour different environments – and a different microbiome! \nYou will get to learn:\n– who are the characters of the soil food web and the key roles that each of them play\n– some of the tell-tale signs of the different kinds of biology in your soil you can access courtesy of your own senses\n– what organic and regenerative practices help to support (or harm!) the kinds of microbiology we are looking to attract \nWe will spend some time in the classroom learning\, and time outdoors on the beautiful grounds of the City Farm.\nBring your questions and your curiosity to get to know a little more about the thriving world beneath our feet! \nParticipants are also welcome to bring along a sample of their own soils to view under the microscope after the workshop. \nWhen: 6 September\, 2:00 – 4:00 pm\nWhere: Canberra City Farm \nBring: A soil sample from your own back yard\nCost: $40.00\nRegister: https://events.humanitix.com/workshop-the-living-soil-exploring-the-world-of-our-soil-microbiome

SUMMARY:MONTHLY MINGLE - August
DESCRIPTION:MONTHLY MINGLE\nUnfortunately Liz Lea is no longer able to be our guest this month but we are very pleased Endymion Cooper has volunteered to step up as our guest speaker.  From little things big things grow! Endymion will set out his vision for Little Green Thumbs – a garden-based food education program for children and their families which he will be implementing in Term 4 at the Farm. \nBorn in a small house on a bush block outside Nimbin\, Endymion grew up knowing that food is something that grows from the ground. His earliest memories are of fish that come from the sea\, eggs that come from chooks\, milk that comes from a cow\, veggies that grow in the garden\, and fruits that drop from the trees. He is deeply uncomfortable with the idea that kids can grow up knowing food as something that comes in a packet from the shop. Through Little Green Thumbs he hopes to share the joy of discovery\, connection to nature\, and a love of good food that comes from growing your own. \nCanberra City Farm’s Little Green Thumbs program kicks Tuesday 14 October at 4:00 PM (first Tuesday of term 4). Come along to this month’s mingle to hear what’s on offer and find out how you can get involved. \nAs usual\, before Endymion’s talk\, we’ll be firing up the pizza oven and will provide pizza bases\, sauce\, and cheese; please bring other pizza toppings for our volunteers to prepare various options to share. \nLunch: 12.30 – 1:30 pm\nTalk: 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm \nWho: All welcome! \nCost: FREE. \nThe farm always welcomes your membership (join here). \nRegister: here for pizzas by Friday 15 August if you can (not essential). https://events.humanitix.com/august-monthly-mingle-rt6ssmb6 \nBring: pizza toppings to share\, drinks

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP - Winter Fruit Tree Pruning #2
DESCRIPTION:Second Winter Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop\nThe Canberra City Farm is delighted to offer a second workshop on winter pruning of apples and pear trees. Join living legend of the orchard\, Jonathan Banks\, as we take a long hard look at our pomes. \nWe will start with an overview of the workshop and general discussion of your fruit tree pruning interest. In the remainder of the workshop participants will gain knowledge of and practical experience in pruning: \n\nHow can we prune to maximise a crop of healthy fruit?\nWhat are the growth habits of our trees?\nWhat’s the best size and shape?\nWhich tools are best?\nWhat are some common pruning mistakes?\n\nJonathan will answer these questions and more. Some of the workshop will be spent in the classroom learning a bit of theory on pruning. There will also be practical time in our beautiful orchard as Jonathan demonstrates pruning techniques. Come home with the skills to get started on your own trees. No previous pruning experience necessary. \nOptional Working Bee: after lunch you are welcome to join us to prune some of the pome fruit trees in our orchard under the guidance of experienced volunteers. \nA joint workshop with SEE-Change’s latest community group\, Community Orcharding for Abundance \nWhen: \n\nSunday 3 August 2025\nWorkshop: 10 am to 1 pm\nWorking Bee: 2 to 4 pm (optional)\n\nCost: $35 for members of Canberra City Farm and Community Orcharding for Abundance (use your discount code)\n$60 non-members \nRegister: here
